Did You Know?

Epinephrine

Epinephrine autoinjectors are the golden standard for the medical management of anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic reactions happen in response to an allergen, typically insect bites/stings or food like peanuts. As a trained first aid rescuer, remember:

  • If the victim was exposed to an allergen and has a history of anaphylaxis, inject epinephrine immediately. Do not wait for anaphylactic signs and symptoms.
  • Assist the victim in injecting if he or she is unable to. Inject over a muscular area, like the outer thigh. DO NOT inject into the hands or feet.
  • If symptoms persist and there is still no medical help, inject another dose in 10 to 20 minutes. For children, inject after 5 to 30 minutes if symptoms persist.
  • Once the victim is stable, bring to the emergency room.
